Annalivia School supports the hard work and cause of SPPD (Society of Poor People Development) in southern Indian state of Tamilnadu where they work on locally based initiatives designed to promote the education of disadvantaged rural children, promote sustainable agriculture, and provide support to women’s groups.
SPPD have identified the need to remedy the lack of effective communicative English teaching in rural schools in a country where it is often the language of third level instruction and an important lingua franca for people from the many different language backgrounds that are part of the amazing diversity of India. To be able to communicate effectively in English will enable the people we are working with to get around blocks on social mobility and defend themselves from discrimination in a country that is highly class conscious.

 | Annalivia School has undertaken to set up and administer a Communicative English Language programme, on-site for the staff, children and community that SPPD works with.
We are offering 2 scholarships per year onto our ACELS (Irish Department of Education recognised) CELT teacher training courses to teachers willing to travel to India to teach English, on a voluntary basis for a period of 4 months from August to December and January to April.
In order to ensure the successful applicants are committed to the programme they will be requested to pay the training course fee in advance and it will be refunded to them in full on completion of the four month teaching term that they sign up for. The scholarship holder, either through fundraising or from their own resources, will have to cover the cost of the flight to Trichy airport. Once there full board and accommodation will be provided in the SPPD community centre. They will also receive a small amount of pocket money during their stay.
This is a very rare opportunity and will be an excellent opportunity for the newly qualified teachers to build up teaching experience with adults and children (aged 6 -17) in unique surroundings.
Annalivia School will also provide additional induction on: o Cultural differences and difficulties o Challenges with teaching the different students groups within SPPD o Teaching young learners o Indian English Vs Standard English o Tamil English pronunciation issues. o Practical information o Travel tips and pointers.
However, before considering an applying for our SPPD CELT scholarship, please note that we will only be interviewing candidates that we feel will be able to complete the 4 month term. It is quite likely that you will be one of the only first language English speakers in the area. This programme will suit trainees with a certain degree of maturity and experience. Also, the ideal candidate will have an interest in working with children and preferably already have some experience of doing so.
• Conditions: o We will offer the teachers a contract of a minimum of 4 months duration o We recognise that 4 months of immersion in such different surroundings may result in a certain degree of cultural shock so there will be a 2 week holiday break during the 4 month contract. These weeks may be taken non-consecutively but the breaks must be arranged at least one month in advance to avoid disrupting the consistency of the courses. o The nominal amount of pocket money will be paid or a monthly or weekly basis. o The teacher will have reasonable and occasional access to internet and email. o Towards the end of their term the teacher will complete a full academic report on each student as well as a global report on the course. Individual feedback is to be given to students and the reports will be sent to Annalivia School prior to the completion of the course and will be forwarded to SPPD. o The teacher will be refunded the cost of the TEFL course upon full completion of their 4 months in SPPD and the submission of their academic reports.
• Ongoing Support Following on from the induction, Annalivia will stay in regular e-mail contact with the teacher from Ireland to offer support and advice. |
