TEFL COURSE / CELT FAQ'S

We've compiled a list of frequently asked questions for potential trainees;

What is the course made up of?
The course programme consists of at least 124 hours of study and is a combination of face-to-face sessions & trainer-directed assignments. There are 100+ programmed hours of face-to-face contact (including input and practice sessions), between course trainers and trainees.

Input sessions cover an introduction to the following:
• Planning, preparation and evaluation of individual lessons and programmes of work.
• A range of teaching techniques to support and facilitate learners’ English language development and performance.
• Classroom management.
• How to evaluate, select and adapt ELT course materials and resources for use with learners at different levels.
• The background to the English language and the description of how it works (grammar, syntax, word usage and phonetics) and how to apply this basic knowledge to effective teaching.
• Current language learning theories but also teaching methodologies relevant to ELT.
• How to monitor and evaluate learners’ language learning needs, competence and achievements.
• Professional development and how to evaluate, review, and reflect upon feedback about teaching and use it to inform future good practice.

Does the course include any teaching practise with real students?
Yes, each individual trainee will have direct experience of teaching real students for a total of 6 hours during the course. These will supervised and followed up with feedback sessions. There is also an initial micro teaching practice, delivered to fellow trainees.

How are we assessed?
The course is mainly assessed through the supervised teaching practices and the assignments (you must also complete worksheets, 4 revision quizzes and a portfolio).
Do I need a degree to take the course?
In accordance with ACELS regulations recognised certificates (entitling the holder to teach in Ireland) are only issued to those with a third level degree. Unendorsed Annalivia certificates, which are acceptable certification for native EFL teachers in many countries around the world, will be issued to non-degree holders who obtain a pass.
Are there any other requirements needed to do the TEFL/CELT course?
Yes, trainees will be asked to do an interview and a short written task and before their place on the course is confirmed. Interviews will be conducted in the 10 days before the course is due to begin.
Do I need a minimum level of English? Do you accept non-native English speakers?
Yes to both, although the course is open to non-native applicants who, in addition to meeting the requirements listed in the general applicant information, must also demonstrate a sufficient level of English to complete the course and sufficient competence to teach the language.

Non-native applicants must have attained at least a C1 in the Council of Europe Framework.
E.g. 6.5 in IETLS
• Pass in CAE
• or the equivalent level in another exam

Applicants must produce an original certificate to this effect.

Where the certificate dates from more than three years ago the applicants must do an initial level test set by the school to ensure they have maintained their English at an acceptable level.

All non-native applicants must undergo an interview and be able to demonstrate a sufficient level of English in it both to undertake the course and practice as a teacher of English.
What if I do not pass the interview?
If you do not pass the interview, your €200 deposit will be returned (less a 50 euro administrative fee) to you as unfortunately you will not be allowed to attend the course.
